The Black Resurrection, the second book in my Red Wraith series, is out today on Amazon! Want a preview? The first chapter is below:

Da looked away as the Imperial Guards mutilated his nearly completed dragon.

He’d had time to finish the body, enhancing its elephantine base by grafting on the necks of a hundred snakes, the bellies of a thousand frogs, and the scales of countless carp. The four legs were done too, ending in tiger paws tipped with hawk talons. And the head was perfect,...

Writing update: The Black Resurrection, the second novel in my Red Wraith series, will be available July 15 on Amazon! It's a standalone sequel, so you don't need to have read the previous book or the prequel novellas. (But if you'd like to, my suggested reading order is here.)

Isaura’s son has been kidnapped.

Worse, his kidnappers are taking him to Huancavelica, a Peruvian mercury mine so dangerous it’s known as the “Mine of Death.”

Her only ally is Amadi, a runaway slave haunted b...

Like Game of Thrones? Then you should check out Knee-Deep in Grit, a compilation of Grimdark Magazine's first two years of fiction.

Grimdark is basically what it sounds like: a genre where light doesn't always win out. Might too often makes right. Heroes are flawed and sometimes lose. Idealism gets you killed. I don't want to read (or write) grimdark all the time, but I definitely enjoy some Thrones-style cliché busting now and then.

I was fortunate enough to have a short story in th...

The Ascenders comes out today! The first chapter is below. Enjoy!

----

The infernal pig shot out of Chase’s hands, scrabbling further into the woods and away from the colony.

Damn it all, but that sow was slippery.

Chase, having fallen onto the muddiest portion of the trail when the swine eluded his grasp (again!), picked his stout frame off the ground and sprinted in pursuit.

“Mila!” he shouted. “You blasted ball of bacon, come back here!”

That was two hours of chasing this pig...

The Battle Dancer is out! It's a quick read—only 14,000 words or so. The first scene is below. Enjoy!

As recently as six months ago, the sight of Dzune’s terraced ingenuity would have taken Tay’s breath away.

Each level of the city was set a little farther back than the one beneath it, hollowed out of the desert valley like spoonfuls scooped from thick stew. The buildings were constructed from rich red brick, and everything was connected by a carefully maintained system of ladd...

My novella The Battle Dancer is available for pre-order!

It's a bit of an odd bird—I built it from some of the 70,000 or so words I cut from The Red Wraith. (That was a bloodbath of a revision, let me tell you.) Consequently, the story isn't self-contained; it's meant as a lead-in to The Red Wraith. But for what it's worth, an earlier version of The Battle Dancer won an honorable mention from the Writers of the Future contest.

Here's the official blurb:

Everyone in Dzune had always...

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and gained less weight than I did:)

Just wanted to let you know that Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing recently released a print version of The Red Wraith. They also let me revise the story a bit and restore the original opening. If you want an autographed version, let me know, and I’ll get it to you for my author's discount plus shipping.

Oh, and the eBook version is updated as well.

Happy holidays!

The Red Wraith is out! Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing helped me celebrate by hosting a virtual release party on Facebook. Several readers—and even a few fellow authors—stopped by to ask questions. I had a blast answering them. Good stuff:)

The Red Wraith is available for pre-order on Amazon! And at a nice discount: just $2.99 (a $3 savings) if you buy now. September 7 is the Kindle-only release date. The book goes live everywhere December 6.

The story's set in Early America. The protagonist is a Native American who becomes the focus for magic’s reentry into the world.

I couldn't be happier with the cover—Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing did a great job. Many thanks to them for their hard work and insight.

House with a Blue Door, my first novel, is finally out! It's been a long wait—I wrote the original draft eight years ago—but I'm pleased with the result. You can buy it at the links below.

The story is inspired by the time I spent working at a group home for mentally handicapped residents, many of whom had additional diagnoses like Down syndrome, Tourette’s, and paranoid schizophrenia. My primary goal is to show this group of people as people, not stereotypes. My secondary goal is to...

I write mostly speculative fiction. Usually fantasy, with historical elements mixed in. Sometimes there's a bit of mystery too, or (shhh!) even a little romance.

But it's weird—it's always weird. Consider yourself warned.
