The Black Resurrection, the second book in my Red Wraith series, is out today on Amazon! Want a preview? The first chapter is below:
Da looked away as the Imperial Guards mutilated his nearly completed dragon.
He’d had time to finish the body, enhancing its elephantine base by grafting on the necks of a hundred snakes, the bellies of a thousand frogs, and the scales of countless carp. The four legs were done too, ending in tiger paws tipped with hawk talons. And the head was perfect,...
Writing update: The Black Resurrection, the second novel in my Red Wraith series, will be available July 15 on Amazon! It's a standalone sequel, so you don't need to have read the previous book or the prequel novellas. (But if you'd like to, my suggested reading order is here.)
Isaura’s son has been kidnapped.
Worse, his kidnappers are taking him to Huancavelica, a Peruvian mercury mine so dangerous it’s known as the “Mine of Death.”

Grimdark is basically what it sounds like: a genre where light doesn't always win out. Might too often makes right. Heroes are flawed and sometimes lose. Idealism gets you killed. I don't want to read (or write) grimdark all the time, but I definitely enjoy some Thrones-style cliché busting now and then.

The Battle Dancer is out! It's a quick read—only 14,000 words or so. The first scene is below. Enjoy!

It's a bit of an odd bird—I built it from some of the 70,000 or so words I cut from The Red Wraith. (That was a bloodbath of a revision, let me tell you.) Consequently, the story isn't self-contained; it's meant as a lead-in to The Red Wraith. But for what it's worth, an earlier version of The Battle Dancer won an honorable mention from the Writers of the Future contest.
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and gained less weight than I did:)

They also let me revise the story a bit and restore the original opening. If you want an autographed version, let me know, and I’ll get it to you for my author's discount plus shipping.
Looking for something to read over lunch? The eBook versions of my short stories are all $0.99. Personal favorites: “Branded Faith” (the inspiration for my new novel The Red Wraith) and “Love and World Eaters” (which draws on my time as an intern at the Chicago Field Museum).
As part of its Spring into Spring eBook Sale, Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing is offering The Red Wraith for $0.99 today through Saturday. Check out the sale’s Facebook page for details, other discounted titles, and author extras like the “interview” below I did with Tay, one of the characters in The Red Wraith:
Me: So, Tay of the Dzune—what’s with the milky eyes? Can you see out of them?
Tay: I was ready for you, wasn’t I?
Me: Indeed you were! I hear you’re a fate reade...
